Black Jack – also referred to as ‘twenty-one’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a card game that nowadays is generally seen in a betting house with players attempting their luck on acquiring the elusive ‘twenty one’. It is widely believed that the game came into existence in France through the 17th century. However, as with many other casino games the precise development of the game is still a mystery.

Twenty-one was introduced to the U.S. after the French Revolution, but the game did not become favored in the betting houses until the casino offered bonus payouts. This was the only way that appeared to get people gambling on pontoon. One variation on the bonus payout was for a player to acquire ‘twenty one’ with the blackjack card (given a value of 10 points) and an ace (valued at eleven points). With the increasing appeal of the game the payouts were phased out but the name of the game ‘twenty-one’ lasted.

Chemin de fer isn’t just about acquiring a straight ‘twenty-one’, but the main adventure is to defeat the croupier without busting. The betting house clearly has an advantage over the gambling players over the long run, but with black jack the player retains a bit of choice.

Since 1931 when the U.S. initial approved wagering, black jack has developed into a quintessential gambling den game. Furthermore, it’s the combination of both skill and math used in black jack that has caused the game to be hugely popular. Pontoon gives an alluring proposition to any academic, math guy or betting player looking to analyze the tactic of the game.
